When it comes to interviews and ‘getting the job’ my philosophy is to be optimistic, perhaps to a fault, but better than the alternative of making assumptions about who may know who. If I see a job I am particularly interested in, I go in assuming I will know someone, somehow.
Whether you’re a Web designer, investment analyst, or civil engineer, you can’t stand professionally still. It’s not enough to be good now; you have to stay good. That means keeping up to date with new trends and developments in your field of expertise, and your industry.
Waiting for the national jobs picture to brighten, or for government or corporate initiatives to stimulate employment, is folly for the individual job seeker. The responsibility for staying employable in the long term rests on each of us.
